Legal action against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad?

It sounds unlikely that the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will be brought to trial on the evidence of publicly calling for the wiping out of Israel from the world map. He is just the mouthpiece of the Iranian regime that stands behind him as it first gave him the go-ahead to stand as presidential candidate before finally and surprisingly winning against all expectations. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is only a façade for the Iranian regime. He is far from being an executive president as the important decisions are taken by the Ayatollahs and their spiritual leader.

It will be just a waste of time and a futile legal manoeuvre to bring to prominence accusations against him. He, in a way, symbolizes the sovereignty of his country. To date no acting president was brought to trial on similar charges. The precedents concern deposed presidents like Saddam Hussein of Iraq and Slobodan Milosevic of Yugoslavia. His immunity will make him unreachable and under no obligation to account for his statements or retract them.

The emphasis should how be on how to make the Iranian regime friendly to its traditional enemies like the USA and Israel. There are more important issues like its nuclear program and its role in the current situation in Iraq. This is what sounds urgent. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, according to his country’s constitution will have the maximum of two terms to be in power. But a faulty approach to Iranian regime as a whole can have devastating effects for generations.

Trying him will sound like the mock trials some lawyers take pleasure in performing against leaders. Egypt is one of the countries where lawyers are famous for trying international figures like US president George Bush and UK PM Tony Blair. The verdict remains like the final scene of a play which is known to be in advance a fiction with little impact on reality.

As Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, by the limited powers attributed to him, should be seen as a media star taking pleasure in vehemently attacking the US and Israel to draw public support inside and outside Iran, for appearing as the main threat to their existence in the Middle East.
